Collision-Proof Driving 101

Defensive driving starts before you get behind the wheel. Being aware of the road and weather conditions in advance will help you plan which route to take. Aside from that, it?s also important to pack basic supplies in your car. These supplies include candles, snacks, first aid kits, and blankets in case of emergency.

Tips on Defensive Driving

Here are some things you should remember when you?re driving:

  • Check your mirrors from time to time, at least every 3-5 seconds.
  • Develop relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing. This will help you maintain your calm when driving under pressure.
  • Continuously check for possible dangers.
  • Give fellow motorist their right of way, but be ready to react to unexpected lane changes.
  • Keep distance from other vehicles when in heavy traffic and give enough time to respond by slowing your speed.
  • Know and obey the speed limit in the area. Slow down when you?re driving on an icy or wet road.
  • Yield to traffic appropriately and follow the traffic signals and stop signs. Give yourself time to react by driving at an appropriate speed. Before you enter an intersection, take the time to scan the surroundings first. Look left and right before crossing or turning.
  • Turn signals are there for a reason, use them. These signals will let other motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians know which direction you?re going. In most states, the law requires you to signal within 100 feet of a turn. But check regulations in your area first to be sure.
  • Make sure you use turn signals and check blind spots when passing. Check the situation in front and behind your vehicle as well. You must be able to pass without getting too near to the car in front or going over the speed limit.
  • Give at least three seconds of distance between your car and the one in front of you. Meanwhile, if someone is tailgating you, it is best not to speed up. Instead, maintain your speed and move over to let them pass when it is already safe to do so.
  • If there are cyclists or pedestrians down the road, slow down and stay behind them until it?s safe to pass.
  • Watch out for animals or other obstacles ahead of time. This will allow you to brake or steer safely around them instead of swerving to another lane.
