6 Things that AREN’T Covered by your Homeowners Insurance

Your home is probably your most important investment. And how do you ensure it is well taken care of? Homeowners insurance, of course! While you may sleep soundly knowing that your house 100% covered, do you know that there are loopholes in every homeowners insurance coverage? We never like it when something isn’t covered by our clients? insurance. So it’s important for us to share these situations with you so you can take greater precautions and/or purchase additional insurance to be fully protected.

Earthquakes

Do you know that earthquake insurance isn’t only for those who live in California? Tremors happen anywhere, and earthquake damage isn’t covered by your homeowners? insurance policy. If you aren’t living anywhere near major fault lines, chances are earthquake insurance rates tend to be more affordable.

Flood

Whether you reside in a flood-prone area or not, consider getting a separate flood insurance policy. That’s because homeowners’ insurance doesn’t usually cover the flood damages. Surveys show that flood claims for the past few years averaged $39,000, but yearly average flood insurance rate is only $700.

Sewer Backups

Sewer backup is a type of water damaged caused by clogged sewer or sump pump. That, too, isn’t included in your homeowners’ policy. Don’t risk having a flooded basement and damaged items for another little expense. Buy additional coverage and protect your home.

Mold

While many species of molds are harmless, there are others that can cause health problems. Mold damage can cause you eye and skin irritations, wheezing, throat irritation, and nasal stuffiness. It can also worsen asthma conditions.

Whether your homeowners insurance policy covers this or not, it boils down to what the cause of the damage is. Did you address a sudden burst pipe immediately? If yes, then you’re probably covered. But if it took you quite some time to resolve the issue, then you may expect to pay for the mold removal costs on your own.

Relocation Costs

If anything caused you to flee your home for an extended period, you might have already known that some homeowners? insurance policies don’t cover relocation costs (although the home loss is covered). Get additional coverage for relocation costs and living expenses; this should protect you for 12 to 24 months depending on your policy.

Termites

Are you aware that termites can cause $5 billion worth of damage on average? None of that is included in a homeowners’ insurance. Consider buying termite coverage to protect you financially from costly repairs. But what is the best way of saving yourself from spending too much on termite damages? Always monitor for wood damage!
