While we often don?t think about them, disasters and accidents happen. One of the most common is house fires. From cooking in the kitchen to electric sparks from a malfunctioning wire, fires can affect you. Make sure you?re prepared for a house fire with these tips.
Whenever there?s a fire, call 9-1-1 immediately. Firefighters are highly trained professionals and keep you safe. Let them put out the fire, but, if you have to, you should still know how to put out a small fire. Check out these tips and take preventative measures to avoid house fires.
- Keep a fire extinguisher on hand and know how to use it. Be sure to check what kind of extinguisher it is. Although a Type A:B:C extinguisher will put out just about any type of fire, different types of fire, require different types of extinguishers. Electrical fires are best put out by a Type C, cooking fires are best put out by a Type A:B:C, and small gas fires are best put out by a Type B.
- Keep baking soda in the kitchen. According to FEMA, the majority of house fires happen in the kitchen. These grease fires cannot be put out by water. Smother the flames with a metal lid or cover the flames with LOTS of baking soda. It will help deprive the flames of oxygen which will help to put them out.
- Have an escape plan. In the event of a fire, always call 9-1-1 and get out of the house. With your family or housemates, devise a plan for an emergency. Pick a meeting spot and everyone head to it in the event you need to evacuate.
