In the past years, a growing number of residents in Texas are now concerned about the mold in their businesses and homes. Here, we will give you general information regarding mold and how the insurers respond to mold problems. This information applies to homeowners, businesspeople, renters, and owners of condominiums.

Is it possible for mold to become a problem in my house?

Yes. Molds grow in places where conditions will allow it. They only require two things to grow: moisture and a food source. Moisture may come from any source including drainage problems, landscape, improper maintenance of air conditioners, inadequately repaired or neglected roofs, appliance hoses or leaky pipes, and high humidity levels.

Should I Have Any Concern About Mold In My House?

Yes. It is undesirable and unsanitary to have indoor mold growth. If you smell or see mold inside your house, you should take the necessary steps to clean it up, eliminate the cause and take away the mold. If you leave mold without checking, the growth of mold can become severe. It can cause health problems and damage the structure of your house.

Can Molds Become a Health Concern?

As per the Centers for Disease Control, the exposure to mold does not usually result in health problems. There are over 10,000 kinds of mold that have existed for thousands of years. Most people breathe, eat and touch some mold daily without any ill effect. Even the fresh air has mold.

If there is an active, persistent and extensive growth of mold, it can potentially cause health problems. The most common problems are allergic reactions like eye irritation, coughing, sneezing and wheezing.

Even if a lot of people rarely experience the ill effects of mold exposure, there are a few individuals who are more sensitive to it compared to others. The mold of the same amount may give health problems to one person but not to other people. Individuals who have a high risk of severe symptoms or illness are those who have existing respiratory problems like chemical sensitivity, asthma, and allergies. It can also affect the elderly, infants, young children and people with weak immune systems.

Will the Homeowners Insurance Policies Cover Damage from Mold?

It may depend on the policy coverage you have and the cause of the mold. Water and moisture are necessary for mold to grow but not all of the causes of water damage are under coverage in the homeowner’s insurance policies.

The standard policies of homeowners may cover certain types of accidental and sudden water loss like burst pipes, sump pump failure or sewer back-up if you have that coverage. However, even if the policy covers these kinds of water damage, some companies specifically limit or exclude the coverage for mold.

As of the moment, there is a requirement for the mold remediators to have a license. There are also no certifications and standards for indoor air quality contractors like the mold remediation specialists. Since there is no federal or state oversight of these contractors, always be cautious whenever you sign contracts so that unscrupulous mold remediators will not take advantage of you.
