We’ve spoken with many of our motorcycle insurance clients who think this time of year is the best time to go for a ride. It’s not too cold and the hot Atlanta summer sun isn’t shining down on us yet. If your motorcycle hasn’t been driven much through winter it’s a good idea to run some routine maintenance before that first ride of spring.
Here are 4 of the most important maintenance tasks to consider before taking your bike out this spring:
1) Inspect the Battery
Make sure your battery is still in good condition by checking for clean terminals with secure connections. If you have not driven the bike in a long time and you have a battery tester it’s a good idea to check it to be sure it’s still recharging properly.
2) Replace & Top Off Your Fluids
Check the bike for any leaks and if you haven’t changed the oil in a long time it might be a good idea to do so if the bike has been sitting without being turned on or off for a long time.
Check the following fluids to be sure you’re not low and replace or top them off if necessary:
- Coolant (if you don’t have an air-cooled bike)
- Shaft Drive Oil
- Hydraulic Fluid
- Battery fluid
3) Check the frame and body
It’s a good idea to double-check the frame and body of your motorcycle to make sure there aren’t any new dents or cracking. You’ll also want to verify that your forks and shocks are correctly adjusted and that your belt and chain has the right amount of tension. Check all fasteners to make sure there are no loose wires, hoses, or other parts on the bike.
4) Check All Your Controls
Check the cables on your throttle, brakes, and clutch to be sure they’re moving freely and that there are no kinks or fraying. Also,?remember to check your shifter and brake pedals for smooth movement.
If there’s anything you’re not sure about, have the motorcycle inspected by a trained mechanic. The last thing you want is to find out about one of these issues when you’re cruising on I-75 at 75mph!
